Chapter 2 Role of Government in Health

Summary: Role of the Government in Health

Health is one of the most important aspects of human life. It is not just about being free from illness but also about living in a clean and safe environment. The government plays a crucial role in ensuring that all people have access to good healthcare services, especially the poor and needy.

Why is Health Important?

Health is not only about going to the doctor when sick. It includes clean drinking water, proper sanitation, nutritious food, and a pollution-free environment. If people do not get these basic needs, they fall sick easily. That is why healthcare should be available to everyone, not just the rich.

Public and Private Healthcare Services

There are two types of healthcare services in India: public (government) and private (owned by individuals or companies).

- Public healthcare services are run by the government. Government hospitals and clinics provide free or low-cost treatment so that even poor people can get medical help. However, these hospitals often have long waiting lines and fewer doctors.

- Private healthcare services are expensive but provide better facilities. Rich people can afford private hospitals, but poor people cannot. This creates a gap where some people get good treatment while others struggle to afford even basic care.

Government’s Role in Healthcare

The Indian government is responsible for improving public health. It does this by:

1. Setting up hospitals and clinics – Government hospitals provide affordable healthcare, especially in villages and small towns.

2. Running health programs – Free vaccinations, maternity care, and disease control programs help people stay healthy.

3. Providing clean water and sanitation – Safe drinking water and proper toilets reduce diseases like cholera and typhoid.

4. Creating awareness – The government educates people about hygiene, healthy eating, and the importance of vaccinations.

5. Controlling the cost of medicines – Some medicines are made cheaper so that everyone can afford them.

Healthcare Problems in India

Despite the government’s efforts, many people still do not have access to proper healthcare. The main problems are:

- Shortage of doctors and hospitals – Many villages do not have enough medical facilities.

- Overcrowded government hospitals – People have to wait for long hours to get treatment.

- High cost of private healthcare – Poor people cannot afford private hospitals.

- Lack of awareness – Many people do not know about free government health services.

Importance of Clean Water and Sanitation

Many diseases spread because of dirty water and poor sanitation. For example, diseases like diarrhoea, malaria, and dengue can be reduced by improving water supply and keeping the surroundings clean. The government runs programs to build toilets, clean drains, and provide clean drinking water.

The government plays an important role in keeping people healthy by providing free healthcare, clean water, and sanitation. However, there are still many challenges. More hospitals, doctors, and better facilities are needed, especially in rural areas. At the same time, people should also take care of their health by maintaining hygiene, eating healthy food, and following government health programs.
