Summary of "Quality"
The story "Quality" by John Galsworthy is about Mr. Gessler, a shoemaker in London, who made the best handmade boots. He loved his work and put great care into every pair of shoes he made.
The narrator, who knew Mr. Gessler since childhood, admired his skill. Mr. Gessler and his brother had a small shop where they made only custom-ordered boots. Their shoes were strong and lasted a long time.
However, big shoe companies started taking away his customers because they used advertisements and machines to make shoes faster. Mr. Gessler never advertised and refused to lower his quality, even though it meant fewer people bought from him.
Over time, his business suffered, and his brother passed away. Mr. Gessler kept working alone, making shoes with the best leather. The narrator once ordered many pairs to support him.
One day, the narrator returned to find Mr. Gessler's shop gone. He learned that Mr. Gessler had passed away due to starvation because he spent all his time making perfect boots and never earned enough money.
The story shows Mr. Gessler’s dedication to his craft and how traditional skills struggle against modern businesses.
