Summary of "Expert Detectives"
The story "Expert Detectives" is about two curious siblings, Nishad (also called Seven because his name means the seventh note) and his ten-year-old sister, Maya. They are very interested in a mysterious man named Mr. Nath, who lives alone in Shankar House. Mr. Nath has burn scars on his face, does not have a job, and hardly talks to anyone. The children wonder if he is a criminal hiding from the police.
Maya believes strongly that Mr. Nath is a crook. She thinks he may have stolen money and is living in hiding. She points out that Mr. Nath does not work but still pays for his food. Maya is sure that he must have hidden treasure somewhere in his room. She also notices that Mr. Nath has only one visitor—a tall, fair, fat man who comes every Sunday for lunch. This makes her even more suspicious. She thinks this man could be his partner in crime.
Nishad, on the other hand, feels sorry for Mr. Nath. He thinks Mr. Nath is lonely and kind, not a criminal. When he visits the clinic with their mother (who is a doctor and treats Mr. Nath), Nishad meets Mr. Nath and gives him a chocolate bar. Nishad is touched by how thin and sad Mr. Nath looks. To find out more, Nishad speaks to Ramesh, a worker at a nearby restaurant. Ramesh tells him that Mr. Nath eats simple food—two chapatis, dal, and a vegetable—and always pays in cash. He also says Mr. Nath gives generous tips. This makes Nishad think Mr. Nath is a good person.
Maya and Nishad argue about Mr. Nath’s true identity. Maya is excited to play detective and is determined to prove that Mr. Nath is a criminal. She even makes a list of clues, like how Mr. Nath has no friends, no letters, and only one visitor. Nishad, however, is more concerned about Mr. Nath’s loneliness and wants to be his friend.
The story ends without a clear answer about Mr. Nath. While Maya continues to think he is a crook, Nishad remains convinced that he is just a lonely man who needs kindness.
The story shows how people can see the same situation differently. Maya looks for mystery and excitement, while Nishad shows kindness and empathy. Through their investigation, the children learn that things are not always what they seem.
