A Homeage to Our Brave Soldiers Chapter Summary in easy words

Summary of "A Homage to Our Brave Soldiers"

The story is about two friends, Soumya and Ananda, who exchange letters about their thoughts on soldiers and war memorials. Soumya shares her experience of visiting the National War Memorial in New Delhi, which deeply touched her heart.

During her visit, she learned that even after India's independence in 1947, the country had to fight several wars to protect its borders. The memorial is a tribute to brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in wars like the Indo-China War (1962), Indo-Pakistan Wars (1965, 1971), and the Kargil War (1999). More than 26,000 names of fallen soldiers are engraved on its walls. Soumya feels grateful for their sacrifices, which allow people to live in peace today.

She also learns about India’s highest military honor, the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), awarded for extraordinary bravery in battle. The first PVC was given posthumously (after death) to Major Somnath Sharma in 1947. Other brave soldiers like Lance Naik Albert Ekka and Major Hoshiar Singh also received the PVC for their heroic actions.

Soumya describes the Amar Jawan Jyoti, an eternal flame at the memorial that honors the fallen soldiers. She is amazed by the four concentric circles of the memorial:

1. Amar Chakra (Circle of Immortality) – Represents the undying spirit of soldiers.

2. Veerta Chakra (Circle of Bravery) – Displays murals of heroic battles.

3. Tyag Chakra (Circle of Sacrifice) – Engraved with the names of fallen soldiers.

4. Raksha Chakra (Circle of Protection) – A ring of trees symbolizing security.

After the visit, Soumya and her classmates decide to present stories of bravery in school to honor the soldiers.

Ananda, in her reply, is deeply moved by Soumya’s letter. She recalls her own visit to a war memorial in Chandigarh, where people laid flowers in remembrance of the soldiers. She is inspired to learn more about war heroes like Captain Anuj Nayyar, a Kargil War hero, and even considers joining the army in the future.

The story teaches us the importance of remembering and honoring our soldiers. It also shows how war memorials keep their memories alive for future generations.
