**Friendship** by Subba Rao is a heartwarming story about the bond between an elephant, Gajaraj, and a stray dog. Gajaraj, despite living in royal stables under the king's care, feels lonely. His mahout, though kind, isn't a companion. One evening, a hungry and tired stray dog wanders into the stable. Gajaraj shares his food with the dog, who gratefully accepts and stays. Over time, the two form a close friendship, playing together and enjoying each other's company.

Their joyful companionship ends abruptly when a farmer recognizes the dog, Buntee, as his lost pet. The farmer takes the dog home, despite Buntee’s reluctance and Gajaraj’s sadness. This separation deeply affects both friends. Gajaraj refuses to eat, and Buntee, at the farmer's home, also loses his appetite. Concerned, the farmer realizes the depth of their bond and decides to reunite the dog with Gajaraj.

Once released, Buntee eagerly returns to the stable, where the two friends joyfully reunite. Gajaraj picks up Buntee with his trunk, swinging him happily. Their shared joy lifts everyone's spirits. The mahout and the farmer, touched by the reunion, watch as the two friends eat together, relieved and content. The mahout remarks that not only has Gajaraj found a friend, but he too has gained one in the farmer.
