Mridu, living with her grandparents in Madras, visits her cousins Ravi, Meena, and Lalli. Upon arriving at Rukku Manni’s house, Mridu notices dusty, large slippers near the door but is quickly dragged to the backyard by Ravi. There, they find a kitten, Mahendran, secretly sheltered and fed by the children despite opposition from their grandmother. Ravi proudly claims Mahendran descends from ancient Pallava and Egyptian cats, connecting him to history and mythology in an exaggerated tale.

Their adventure is interrupted by a screeching sound—Lalli struggling to learn the violin under a strict music master. Meanwhile, a beggar at the gate seeks alms but is turned away by Rukku Manni. The children notice the beggar’s blistered feet and decide to help him. Spotting the old slippers near the door, Ravi offers them to the beggar, who gratefully leaves.
Later, the music master searches for his missing chappals, lamenting their cost. Rukku Manni, realizing what happened, scolds the children for their thoughtless generosity. She fetches Gopu Mama’s barely worn chappals to replace the music master’s, who leaves with a mix of satisfaction and complaint.
As Rukku Manni reflects on the incident, she laughs at the chaos caused by the children’s innocence and creativity, wondering what Gopu Mama would say about his chappals being given away.
